Book Description
Written specifically for contractors, this "how-to" book enables you to meet the challenges of green building construction. You'll discover how constructing environmentally friendly, sustainable buildings influences project management, delivery, documentation, and risk. Moreover, the book guides you through these important considerations at all phases of a green construction project, including:

  • Bidding and contracting

Radical Post-Modernism: Architectural Design
by Charles Jencks, Sean Griffiths, Charles Holland, Sam Jacob

Book Description
In this latest issue of Architectural Design the guest editors are drawn, like the content, from contrasting tastes and generations. Charles Jencks, the definer of Post-Modernism for thirty years, discusses some issues that have re-emerged today, while the young group of British architects, FAT, argues for a particular version of RPM. An interview between Rem Koohaas and Charles Jencks discusses the influence of Post-Modernism while investigations of street art, graffiti and the 1980 Venice Biennale show that communication is at the heart of this radical strain of architecture.

  • This issue brings together an unlikely and exciting pairing of guest-editors: internationally acclaimed critic Charles Jencks, whose name became synonymous with Post-modernism in the 80s, and the dynamic architectural group, FAT.
  • Features work by: ARM, Atelier Bow Wow, Édouard François, FOA, Rem Koolhaas, John and Valerio Olgiati.

About the Author
Charles Jencks is an American architectural theorist, author and landscape architect. He has a BA in English Lit, BA and MA in Architecture and a PhD in Architectural History. He guest lectures on architecture in cultural institutions across the world.

Book Description
The past decade has produced enormous changes in both the technology and standards applied to the practice of architectural working drawings. Computer-aided drafting (CAD) has changed the graphic way in which working drawings are produced, while the function of government agencies has been altered dramatically by the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as other less comprehensive legislation. This revised and expanded edition of Wakita's and Linde's classic reference is fully updated and includes more than 300 new illustrations both photos and line drawings prepared by the authors especially for this edition. Also new is a case study used to illustrate the creation of a set of working drawings, sheet by sheet, and an entire chapter on tenant improvement, a growing segment of many architects' practices.

Still the only book that provides in one elegant and beautifully illustrated volume, the full range of skills, concepts and principles, and practical applications that are the hallmarks of a first-rate reference book, The Professional Practice of Architectural Working Drawings, Second Edition, emphasizes, throughout, the importance of communicating general design concepts through specific working drawings. Chapters proceed logically through each stage of development, beginning with site plans and foundation plans and progressing through to elevations, building sections, and other drawings.

The book's final chapters consist of five case studies of actual construction projects: a simple wood residence, a mountain cabin, a beach house, a steel and masonry theatre, and an office park. Stages of development and construction of each building are fully documented, with photographs supplementing and providing comparisons with the working drawings.

Elegant, practical, and comprehensive, the ultimatehandbook for architects is now revised and updated for the 1990s and beyond.

Science of Bridges, Buildings, Dams, and Other Feats of Engineering

Super Structures

The Introduction made the point that this is not a coffee-table picture book. But it will appeal to the interested layperson who is curious about how structures work and about the factors influencing their development over several millennia. It would also be useful background reading for students of architecture and building.

Super Structures: The Science of Bridges, Buildings, Dams, and Other Feats of Engineering
by Mark Denny

Buy from amazon

Book Description
Ever wonder how a graceful and slender bridge can support enormous loads over truly astonishing spans? Why domes and free-standing arches survive earthquakes that flatten the rest of a city?

Physicist Mark Denny looks at the large structures around us—tall buildings, long bridges, and big dams—and explains how they were designed and built and why they sometimes collapse, topple, or burst.

Denny uses clear, accessible language to explain the physics behind such iconic structures as the Parthenon, the Eiffel Tower, the Forth Rail Bridge in Edinburgh, and Hoover Dam. His friendly approach allows readers to appreciate the core principles that keep these engineering marvels upright without having to master complex mathematical equations.

Employing history, humor, and simple physics to consider such topics as when to use screws or nails, what trusses are, why iron beams are often I-shaped, and why medieval cathedrals have buttresses, Denny succeeds once again in making physics fun.

About the Author
After earning a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Edinburgh University, Mark Denny pursued research at Oxford University from 1981 to 1984, then moved into a career in industry. He is the author of Ingenium: Five Machines That Changed the World; Blip, Ping, and Buzz: Making Sense of Radar and Sonar; Float Your Boat! The Evolution and Science of Sailing; and Froth! The Science of Beer, all of which are published by Johns Hopkins. Denny is now semi-retired and lives on Vancouver Island.

Concrete Structures: Stresses and Deformations: Analysis and Design for Serviceability
by A. Ghali, R. Favre, M. Elbadry

Buy from amazon

Book Description
Sustainability is a major requirement in modern structures and modern construction must sustain satisfactory service over a longer life span. Indeed, it is not rare to specify a life span of 100 years for infrastructure such as bridges. Yet many concrete structures have deteriorated prematurely.

Concrete Structures is a complete and a wide-ranging study of stresses and deformations of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. And now the fourth edition has a new emphasis on desiging for serviceability. It is comprehensively updated and gives two new chapters on the effects of corrosion of reinforcement and on the analysis and design for fatigue. It also now includes seventy-five solved examples and a hundred instructive problems with their answers given at the end of the book. The computer programs, available on the accompanying website, are modified to enable interactive input data preparation.

The book is independent of codes of practice, and is especially suitable for practising engineers and graduate students.

Composition & Properties of Drilling & Completion Fluids

Composition & Properties of Drilling & Completion Fluids

Composition & Properties of Drilling & Completion Fluids
by Ryen Caenn, HCH Darley, George R. Gray

Buy from amazon

Book Description
The petroleum industry in general has been dominated by engineers and production specialists. The upstream segment of the industry is dominated by drilling/completion engineers. Usually, neither of those disciplines have a great deal of training in the chemistry aspects of drilling and completing a well prior to its going on production. The chemistry of drilling fluids and completion fluids have a profound effect on the success of a well. For example, historically the drilling fluid costs to drill a well have averaged around 7% of the overall cost of the well, before completion. The successful delivery of up to 100% of that wellbore, in many cases may be attributable to the fluid used.

Considered the "bible" of the industry, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids, first written by Walter Rogers in 1948, and updated on a regular basis thereafter, is a key tool to achieving successful delivery of the wellbore.

In its Sixth Edition, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been updated and revised to incorporate new information on technology, economic, and political issues that have impacted the use of fluids to drill and complete oil and gas wells. With updated content on Completion Fluids and Reservoir Drilling Fluids, Health, Safety & Environment, Drilling Fluid Systems and Products, new fluid systems and additives from both chemical and engineering perspectives, Wellbore Stability, adding the new R&D on water-based muds, and with increased content on Equipment and Procedures for Evaluating Drilling Fluid Performance in light of the advent of digital technology and better manufacturing techniques, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been thoroughly updated to meet the drilling and completion engineer's needs.
